What is Obstetrics?

What is Obstetrics?

Obstetrics (OB) is a branch of medicine that specializes in the care of pregnant women, ensuring the health and well-being of both the mother and baby.

At Franklin County Medical Center, our expert team provides comprehensive prenatal and postpartum care, monitoring fetal development, and guiding expecting women through safe labor and delivery.

Comprehensive Care for a Healthy Pregnancy

Below are a few ways our expert team helps ensure a healthy pregnancy:

  • Prenatal Care: Our obstetric providers perform regular check-ups, including tests and ultrasounds, to monitor the baby’s development and detect potential complications early on.
  • Personalized Care Plans: We understand that every pregnancy is unique. Our skilled obstetric providers create personalized care plans based on medical history, risk factors, and your preferences.
  • Emotional Support: During pregnancy, emotions, and questions may arise. Our caring team offers emotional support and addresses concerns throughout this life-changing time. We prioritize creating a nurturing environment that promotes emotional well-being.

Labor and Delivery

Labor and delivery can be an exciting yet anxiety-inducing part of the pregnancy journey. At Franklin County Medical Center, our obstetrics staff is dedicated to creating a comforting experience for you, your family, and your baby.

Below are a few ideas of what you can expect during labor and delivery:

  • Expert Guidance: continuous expert support throughout labor and delivery, ensuring a safe and positive experience for you and your baby.
  • Personalized Birth Plan: We respect your choices and work closely with you to create a personalized birth plan that aligns with your preferences and desires.
  • Pain Management: Our Obstetric providers discuss various pain relief options, including non-medicated techniques and medications.
    • Non-medicated techniques may include: Breathing exercises, relaxation techniques, hydrotherapy (water immersion), and massage.
    • Medication techniques may include epidurals or other pain medications.
  • Continuous Monitoring: Our healthcare professionals closely monitor your progress, vital signs, and the well-being of your baby, making necessary adjustments for a safe delivery.
  • Including your family: We know these are special moments, so we work to make you and your family comfortable in our delivery rooms.
  • Modern and spacious rooms: You will be treated to modern rooms with a spacious and comfortable feel.
  • Planned and emergent C sections: Our staff is trained and prepared to deliver exceptional experiences in both planned and unplanned C sections.

Postpartum Care and Continuing Care with Family Medicine

Postpartum care is important for your well-being as a new mother after having your baby. It focuses on monitoring your physical and emotional health.

This may include:

  • Guidance on breastfeeding
  • Managing postpartum pain
  • Addressing emotional changes such as postpartum depression
  • Providing guidance on postpartum nutrition
  • Addressing sleep concerns
  • Providing education on infant care

Continuing care with family medicine is an excellent way through all stages of life.

Delivering your Baby with a Family Medicine Provider

Nika Kay, a patient of Dr. Hansen who recently delivered at FCMC shared the following experience:

“I never felt unsafe. The staff was very knowledgeable, and I felt like if I did need something more serious, they would let me know in a calm manner about the plan they had in place. If something serious was to happen I would already know what the plan was and that made me feel safe the whole time. Honestly, the bigger hospitals made me feel less safe, not because they don’t deliver good care, but just because there is so much more going on and less attention devoted to me as a patient. Here, they know me.

I loved delivering with FCMC because of the smaller atmosphere and attentive staff. Everyone always knew what was going on with me. I had the same nurses almost every day. They knew my name and were way more personable. I was pretty much the only one on the floor having a baby and everyone was just so excited and supportive.

Having delivered with an OB before, my favorite aspect about having a child with a family medicine doctor is that your doctor knows what’s going on with me and my baby. It’s important to me that both are connected because they have a lot to do with each other. So I like that he’s caring for me and my baby before, during, and after delivery.”
